Types of gladioli
The gladiolus is renowned for its tall flower spikes and large, colourful blooms. There’s a type of gladiolus for every garden: from smaller varieties that are perfect for pots on the patio to the large-flowered hybrids with their impressive flower plumes.
When to plant gladioli bulbs?
Plant gladiolus bulbs in spring, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up to at least 13°C. In Ireland, the best time to plant gladioli bulbs (corms) is in spring, from March to May, once the risk of frost has passed. For continuous flowering, you can plant them in succession every two weeks until early June. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil for the best results. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, consider adding sand or compost to improve drainage.
How to plant gladioli bulbs?
Gladioli thrive in a sunny, sheltered location. Avoid waterlogged areas; improve heavy soil by adding compost or sand. Space the bulbs about 15 centimetres apart and water them thoroughly after planting. If you’re planting tall varieties, be sure to leave room for stakes, as these flowers often need support.
Tip: To enjoy a continuous bloom until autumn, plant a new batch of gladiolus bulbs every one to two weeks from the last frost until early summer!
